Family Life

Read & Study: Ephesians 6:1-4; Colossians 3:20-21.

Parents and children constitute a family—happy and content when there is respect and obedience, unhappy and resentful when there is anger and rebellion. Paul advised fathers (as heads of the household) and children each to do their part in building a healthy family life.

Children must obey their parents, understanding that rules are in place for their own good. It is God’s will and command that we obey. It is through obedience that we learn to be self-disciplined and growing in our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives. When we are trained in the way we should go, the seeds of hope have been sown so that when we are adults we "will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6).

Fathers/Mothers, on the other hand, should make rules carefully, not to provoke their children, but to "bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord." Parents show great love for their children when they lovingly and consistently discipline them. Resentment usually occurs when parents impose unreasonable demands without concern for the feelings of the children. This training should take place within the context of a loving, caring, forgiving relationship.

Parents and children all have responsibilities in a family. How is your family doing? Do you see love, respect, grace, obedience to God’s word; or are you seeing anger, rebellion, resentment? What are you doing to resolve the differences? Do you have an appeal process that works? Do you need help?

The Insight ministry stands ready to help. Call 386-3640 to schedule an appointment to talk.
